St. John Paul II instituted World Youth Day in 1985 as a way to help young people feel truly cared for by the Church. This international celebration was traditionally held every three years in a different country with the participation of the Holy Father. The ordinary celebration of this event, on the other hand, takes place annually at the local level of the Church. Palm Sunday was the original day that this local celebration was to occur, however Pope Francis has asked Catholic Churches around the world to renew their celebration of youth on Christ the King Sunday (November 21, 2021) as a way to help connect younger generations with “the Mystery of Jesus Christ, the Redeemer of Man” (Homily, Nov. 22, 2020)

The Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life has created “Pastoral Guidelines for the Celebration of World Youth Day in the Particular Churches” as a way to inspire ideas for this local celebration in the parishes.
